[May Point Network] On the 23rd, Hong Kong held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Kaiping Cruise Terminal Land. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Donald Tsang, said that the official commencement of the new cruise terminal marked an important step in the development of cruise tourism in Hong Kong.

At the ceremony, Mr Tsang said that Hong Kong has a strategic location and a natural deep-water port. It is an important port in the Asia-Pacific region. With Hong Kong's diverse tourism facilities and professional tourism industry, Hong Kong has always played a pivotal role in the Asia-Pacific cruise market.

Mr Tsang said that the first berth of the new cruise terminal would be able to park the world's largest and most advanced cruise ship after its opening in 2013. With the completion of the cruise terminal and the shipping terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui, there will be four cruise berths in Hong Kong to accommodate different types and sizes of cruise ships to provide a favourable basis for the long-term development of the cruise industry in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific region.

Hong Kong has made breakthroughs in cruise tourism in the region. Since April this year, the central government has approved the mainland tour group to take a cruise ship with Hong Kong as its home port and travel to Hong Kong via Hong Kong to unveil a new page for the development of cruise tourism between the three sides. The maiden voyage was successfully completed in August this year.

Mr Tsang pointed out that there will be about 20 flights in Hong Kong next year. From Hong Kong to Taiwan, it can carry up to 30,000 passengers. Hong Kong will further liaise with the industry in the three places, and encourage them to develop more "multi-destination" cruise tourism products.

The new cruise terminal was designed and built by the SAR Government. The Government will lease the terminal to the operator to collect the rent but retain the land and terminal ownership. There are two berths at the dock. There is no clearance limit. After completion, the total tonnage of 220,000 tons and the largest cruise ship in the world can be parked.

The Government will construct the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal through two engineering contracts. The first is a site integration contract, including the construction of a cruise berth; the second is the design and construction of a cruise terminal building contract.

The land leveling works of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal are implemented by the Civil Engineering and Development Department. The scope of the project includes the construction of a sloped seawall of about 1,100 metres and a 35-meter-wide and 850-meter-long pier frontage area for parking of different sizes of cruise ships and excavation of about one hundred and thirty-eight. Ten cubic meters of seabed sediment for maneuvering and mooring of giant cruise ships.

The first berth is expected to open in mid-2013 to accommodate the world's largest cruise ship. The second berth will start to park medium-sized cruise ships in 2014. When the submarine gas pipeline is relocated, giant cruise ships can be parked.

In respect of the design and construction of the contract for the construction of the cruise terminal building, the Hong Kong Government is in the process of approving the tender. It is expected that the project will commence next year and will be completed in 2010 or 2015. The cruise terminal building will be an important landmark and will provide operators with world-class services based on high efficiency and efficiency. (China News Network)
